K-pop sensation girl act TWICE topped the country's K-pop group brand value ranking chart for May, followed by boy band BTS and girl group Lovelyz. According to the Korean Institute on Corporation Ranking which recently conducted the research, the nine-member TWICE scored a total of 9,358,971, followed by the seven-boy band BTS with 8,036,445 points, and the rising octette Lovelyz with 5,387,716 points.

K-pop idol star “U-Know” Yunho, a member of renowned duo TVXQ, is coming back to the small screen in his first project after being discharged from his mandatory 21-month military service only last month. Yunho’s talent agency S.M. Entertainment said on May 25 that the 31-year-old singer-turned-actor is slated to return as an actor with a new rom-com television drama, titled “Meloholic” (working title), starring him.

Lee Je-Hoon, recognized well as an attractive character actor in South Korea, is set to star in the upcoming biographical period movie “Anarchist from Colony” as an independence fighter against the Japanese colonial rulers. Directed by award-winning auteur Lee Joon-Ik, “Anarchist from Colony” depicts the life of independence activist Park Yeol, with Lee Je-Hoon taking on the titular role.

South Korea’s most popular beach has turned into a huge art gallery, celebrating a sand festival in the country’s southeastern port city of Busan. The sand festival, which kicked off on Haeundae Beach in Busan on May 26 for a four-day run in a bid to promote the beach prior to its opening in this coming summer, has been partaken by 10 sculptors from six countries including the United States and Canada, according to the organizers of the event.

A severe drought has hit South Korea, with many farmers calling for the government’s special measures to deal with the disaster. South Korea’s eastern Gangwon Province has been experiencing the worst spring drought, with the precipitation in the region standing at a little over 140 mm during the first five months of this year, the lowest since the country officially began to its own meteorological reports in 1973.
