"한국인, 미국 쇠고기 배워야(learn)한다" 발언 논란

버시바우 미국 대사가 어제 한국 정부가 미국산 쇠고기 수입 고시를 연기한 데 대해 실망했다고 하면서 한국 국민들이 미국 쇠고기에 대해서 영어로 'learn', '배운다', '좀 더 알게되길 바란다'는 발언을 해서 논란을 빚었습니다.

"실망감을 감출 수 없습니다. 지난 4월 한미 양국이 합의한 쇠고기 협상은 과학에 근거한 것이었습니다. 하지만 이번 수입 보류 결정은 과학적인 근거가 없는 것입니다. 따라서 한국 정부가 최대한 빨리 합의를 이행하길 바랍니다."
(I can't deny that we're disappointed by this. We think the agreement that our two govts reached in april is a good agreement, that it's based on international science, that there's no scientific justification to postpone implementation, so we hope the Korean govt will implement the agreement as soon as possible.)

"한국인들이 미국소에 대한 과학적 사실들을 더 잘 알아가길 희망합니다. 그러므로써 더 건설적인 논의가 가능할 겁니다. 앞으로 이번 문제에 대한 과학적 사실들을 알리기 위해 할일이 많을 걸로 생각합니다."
(So we hope that Koreans will begin to learn more about the science and about the facts of American beef and that this issue can be addressed constructively. We believe there is a lot of work ahead in getting people to pay more attention to the science and the facts of the matter.)
