S.Korea firms' world DRAM market share hits record high in Q1

South Korean chipmakers' share in the global dynamic random access memory (DRAM) market hit a record high in the first quarter of this year.

Data released on Tuesday by semiconductor e-commerce site DRAMeXchange showed that the combined world DRAM market share of Samsung Electronics Co., SK Hynix Inc. and other local chipmakers, stood at 71.7 percent by volume in the January-March period.

This figure broke the previous record of 70.4 percent tallied a quarter earlier.

Samsung accounted for 43.1 percent of the global market, up 1.7 percentage points from a quarter earlier, while SK Hynix held a share of 27.3 percent, down 0.4 percentage point.

U.S. Micron Technology Inc. followed the Korean competitors, with its share down 1.5 percentage points on-quarter to 22.5 percent in the mentioned period.
