The Chinese government is set to expand a memorial hall in Nanjing which honors people killed in the Nanjing Massacre of the 1930s.

According to Chinese media, the city's government began building a war memorial in December to celebrate China's victory in the two Sino-Japanese wars, on the same site of the Nanjing Massacre Memorial Hall.

The expansion is interpreted as Beijing's efforts to generate anti-Japanese sentiment over Tokyo's World War Two atrocities, following Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's recent visit to the disputed Yasukuni war shrine.

Chinese historians say up to 300,000 were killed by the Japanese Imperial Army during the six-week holocaust in 1937.
