President Park Geun-hye has proposed that the two Koreas hold reunions for families separated during the Korean War and establish a peace park on their border, suggesting a thaw in tension on the peninsula.

The proposal was made during a ceremony celebrating Korea's liberation from decades of Japanese colonial rule in 1945.

The Unification Ministry has reportedly begun taking steps to make the proposed family reunions to materialize around the Chuseok Holiday, which falls on September 19.

The last family reunions were arranged in 2010.

Millions of Koreans were separated from their families after the Korean War, which ended in 1953 with an armistice agreement.

Park also proposed to establish a joint 'world peace park' in the demilitarized zone (DMZ), a heavily fortified four-kilometer buffer zone between the two Koreas.
