FIFA president hopeful Chung Mong-Joon has blamed incumbent FIFA chief Sepp Blatter for having driven the powerful international football body into corruption.

On Monday, Chung declared that he will run for the FIFA presidency.

He served as a vice president of FIFA and as head of the South Korean Football Association.

He was also a member of South Korea's National Assembly.

The 63-year-old gained a reputation as one of Asia's most respected sports administrators after his remarkable achievement in winning the right to co-host the 2002 World Cup.

Demanding Blatter to step down immediately, the 63-year-old Chung in a recent interview with CNN also criticized another strong candidate for the FIFA presidency, Michel Platini, saying the former French footballer's problem is that "he does not appreciate the seriousness of the nature of the current crisis" of FIFA.
