Forests will be created around the Daedeok Industrial Complex in South Korea's central city of Daejeon.

The forests will be formed to reduce fine dust and the urban heat island effect in the region.

The government is set to create 60 hectares of forests across the country to block fine dust on a trial basis.

An additional 4,000 hectares of land will also be planted to help reduce fine dust particles.

The state Korea Forest Service has decided to implement a policy to plant 50 million trees in as much as 25,000 hectares of land across the country.

The ministry's "people-centric forestry policy" is aimed at fostering forests as the nation's valuable economic resources which confer benefit on the public.

[Kim Jae-Hyun, minister, Korea Forest Service]
"We have embarked on a 'new mountain, new forest' campaign, in order to enrich the entire Korean Peninsula by improving the quality of our lives as well as forests in North Korea."

The ministry has also come forward to form a "Korean Peninsula in the forest" through joint tree planting projects with North Korea.
