A hydrogen-powered fuel cell electric bus has begun operating on a regular intra-city bus route for the first time in Korea.

It looks like other ordinary buses but the bus is a hydrogen-powered fuel cell electric bus.

Under a deal with Hyundai Motor Company, the Ulsan city government has started operation of two emission-free, low-noise hydrogen-powered buses on the regular city bus route for the first time in the country.

"Making no engine noise and emitting nothing, the bus reacts instantly and is comfortable to ride in."

[Kim Jeong-Nam, passenger]
"As it's free from exhaust gas pollution, I hope more of this type of bus will be operated."

Hydrogen-powered fuel cell electric vehicles have an advanced air purification system which filters 99.9 percent of very fine dust.

The hydrogen-powered bus is known to be capable of cleaning fine dust emitted by 40 mid-sized, diesel-powered vehicles at once.

The government is set to beef up support to create a market for 16,000 fuel cell electric vehicles, including 1,000 buses, by 2022.
