[K-SCIENCE] Portable Fine-dust Measuring Device

South Korea has been grappling with the worsening air pollution due to increasing fine dust concentration in recent years.

A mobile service provider, a home appliance manufacturer and a food company have jointly come forward to solve the problem.

A cart operated by a food company that produces beverages is moving in an alley of a commercial district in Seoul.

Installed on the yogurt delivery cart is a fine dust measuring device.

The data, collected by the portable device, about the levels of fine dust and ultra-fine dust, as well as the information about temperature and humidity, are relayed to the mobile service carrier on a real-time basis.

By downloading the application for the mapping service, mobile phone users can gain access to the collected real-time data. The service is known to be available for all mobile users regardless of their mobile carrier.

The portable device is simple to install and can be installed in telecommunications stores and where WiFi services are available.

The collected data will also be used as the basis to resolve the fine dust issue.

The number of the new portable fine dust measuring devices to be installed across the country will be increased to 150,000 by the end of next year.
