Hyundai Motor Company has delivered the first units of its “NEXO” hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) model to two local governments.

The "NEXO" delivery events, with one held at the country's southeastern industrial city of Ulsan late last month, coincided with the start of the top South Korean carmaker's sales of the zero-emission car model.

The ceremony in Ulsan also included the opening of a center where visitors can better understand and experience all the details of the emission-free vehicle.

The carmaker plans to increase the number of hydrogen charging stations to 36 by the end of this year, from the current 12.

"NEXO" is known to have an estimated driving range of over 600 kilometers (373 miles) on a five-minute fill-up. Also, it is equipped with high-performance filters capable of removing fine dust the country has been suffering from.

Hyundai added that 1,000 NEXO vehicles on the road will be able to eliminate the fine dust emitted from 2,000 diesel cars, which is equivalent to the amount of carbon dioxide breathed in by some 60,000 trees.
