An electrician replaces an old lamp with an LED light.

The "safety" LED lamp has been developed for senior citizens who live alone.

The newly-developed LED lamp is equipped not only with a motion sensor but also with the Internet of Things technology.

If the sensor detects that an elderly person is immobile for a certain period of time, the safety LED system sends alerting messages to his, or her, family members and neighbors.

The system is designed to effectively prevent underprivileged senior citizens from dying alone and help them in emergency situations.

Smart sensors have also been installed to check their exits and entries.

The new system also provides a service transforming the government's text alerts about disasters into voice messages for those with bad eyesight.

"It (the new LED lamp system) is expected to contribute to creating a safer farming community by helping the elderly farmers live a secure life."

"Godoksa", the phenomenon of someone dying alone without anyone noticing, has become a big social problem in South Korea, with the number of senior citizens who died alone rose to more than 2,000 last year.

The National Agricultural Cooperative Federation plans to expand the distribution of the safety LED lamp system.
