The South Korean government has introduced an instant paper tester to instantly detect fake gasoline.

When the user puts a drop of gasoline onto the white paper tester and if its color turns indigo in seconds, the tested oil is a fake product. If it is real, the color remains unchanged.

"It's amazing that the paper tester turns a different color when a gasoline drop is put onto the paper. I will be able to have trust (in real gasoline) if such a detection service takes root."

The government has distributed the tester made of special paper provided by the Korea Mint Corp. to 25 official vehicle inspection stations across the country, in a move to begin its pilot service to distinguish fake gasoline products from a genuine one.

Over the past five years, an average of 400 gas stations were caught selling fake gasoline products annually in the country, according to the state-run Korea Transportation Safety Authority.

“The trading of adulterated gasoline not only aggravates tax evasion but also causes problems in the automotive fuel oil system and environment. We are expecting it (the detection service) to be a highly effective, preventive measure when it spreads throughout the nation.”

The Authority, which operates the vehicle inspection stations said, it plans to increase the number of the stations providing the fake gasoline detection service to 59 after completing the current pilot program by the end of this year.

The Authority is also considering handing out the paper tester to the general public.
